A Haunting New Soundtrack for Alzheimer’s

Canadian signer-songwriter, Christina Martin, is releasing a new song each week in January as part of Alzheimer’s Awareness month.

The songs highlight some of the most important aspects of the disease, while offering a sense of hope and compassion. While her folky tunes and slightly husky voice undoubtably give an an almost bittersweet quality to the music, Christina is keen not to just focus on the negative of the illness, but to celebrate the good work that many carers do and the fulfillment that sufferers can still experience in their life if they are in the right environment.

Speaking from personal experience, she says “My Mother has Alzheimer’s Disease but Alzheimer’s Disease is NOT who she is.”  She also says that while the decision to put her Mother into a care home was not an easy one, it was the right thing to do. “To the people who sit alone and cling to their homes and apartments and feel sorry for her, I want to tell them that I feel sorry for them, at least she’s living her life to the fullest and having a blast!”
