New Talk Dementia Forum Launched
As part of Dementia Awareness Week, we have decided to launch a dementia forum, to allow people to “Talk Dementia”, by sharing their experiences with others. We noticed that there weren’t many active forums out there, especially based in the UK. Feedback from the public told us that this would be something which people affected by dementia would find useful, which is why we have launched the forum!
The benefits of using online communities and forums was researched by the University of Luxembourg recently, with results showing that online communities and social media can help to improve clinical care for seniors. Researchers found that additional, valuable support can be offered to older people using online communities and social media, in terms of cases of illnesses and diseases, such as Dementia.
The research found that forums etc. can provide some relief to those who are caring for loved ones. These online forums and communities can provide some much needed social support and a place where caregivers can exchange their thoughts and feelings. They are a great place to share caregiving tips and experiences as well as connecting with people who know what it is like to be a carer of someone with dementia.
As well as carers, people who have been diagnosed with or are living with dementia can use these communities to discuss what they are going through and talk to people in similar situations. The research found that those with online access have reported enhanced feelings of control and self-efficacy. Using these forums can allow them to discuss experiences with other people who have had similar experiences or are going through the same issues, which can be comforting; knowing that they aren’t the only one’s going through these.
Please visit the forum, have a look around, introduce yourselves and get talking about dementia!
